So these last four days we had been spending most of our time in the Northern Serengeti hunting down the great migration.. about 2.5 million wildebeests and zebras cross the Mara river twice each year on an analogy that “the grasses are greener on the other side.. Now to find if that’s true, one then has to cross over…
We ended up seeing twelve crossings altogether.. the highest number ever in my experience for just four days.. some days you don’t even see one let alone more than that.. our success however has been due to the following..
1. We were there at the right time.. august and September are ideal months for the crossing but even more we had to arrive at the scene every morning around 0630hrs and see to it through evening sometimes having breakfast there or even with lunch as well..
2. We had all the patience it required.. again the players are usually very nervous before crossing ( I don’t blame them) as they know what lies ahead of them, more or No life, so its sometimes hours before they make up their mind.
3. The combination of the last two reasons is what I call LUCK and if the two are properly mixed the results are overwhelming.
However my biggest concern today is to share some of the great lessons I and my guests have learnt from the crossings..
1. beginning is always difficult..it took almost three hours for the first wildebeest to wet his feet and cross over. All these time waiting and deciding.. its the same in our lives taking that first step towards any endeavour is always difficult but once you break that barrier and take action everything else follow easily just like when the first one crossed the rest were unstoppable.
2. Sacrifices are inevitable.. after a while lots of them died from crocodiles, drowning, breaking their feet you name it.. BUT did the rest stop NO.. they kept going for one reason.. others have sacrificed their lives in the hope of getting to the other side but may not be in vain for when the crocs where busy feasting on the dying ones , it was the safest time for others to cross. Eventually some died at the expense of others survival and they knew that.. at some point you might think you have lost but the truth is you haven’t.. if you analyze your experience well you will find out great lessons for you and for others too.. somebody else won’t have to make the same mistake if you share it with them.. but when one door closes often more open up.. Let learn to look for the open than for the closed ones
3. Its the insights not the sights. Well there were lots of visible challenges like big rocks,, floating crocs and so much water but there were also invisible challenges.. like underwater rocs and crocks waiting,, despite not seeing the invisible they still went on to cross.. sometimes you don’t need to see all the challenges and risks to take action.. some of them will never be visible by our physical eyes (sight) all we need is our insight which will give us an understanding of what lies ahead and still have the internal courage and mindset to go through.
4. No risks no rewards. Well eventually the wildebeests crossed over and enjoyed their hard earned greener grasses.. once you’ve gone through that challenge, don’t forget to take some times and enjoy the rewards…often time we are bombarded by another wish that we don’t get time to enjoy the achievement we have just had..
5. Finally, just like the wildebeests always picture the end results. don’t forget why you started it at first.. with that image in mind we are all more bound to win over the challenges and enjoy the awaiting results on the other side.
It’s neither the destination nor the journey, but who you journey with that counts…
